Sažetak
Mental load has only recently been recognized as a relevant social phenomenon and is gaining importance and research interest mostly in sociological research conducted outside Europe. The term is known also as mental or cognitive labour/housework or household management and it describes the invisible work involved in running a household and family. Daminger (2019) describes it as the responsibility of "anticipating needs, identifying options for meeting them, making decisions and monitoring progress", while Dean et al. (2021) argue that argue that the mental load is the combination of the cognitive labor of family life and the emotional labor associated with this work. This type of invisible housework is performed mostly by women, and is in particular prevalent among working mothers on whose well- being has negative consequences, especially in the circumstances of the Covid-19 pandemic. The neglect of mental load research leads to an underestimation of the gender gap in the private sphere. In this paper we present a brief conceptual overview of mental load in the household and the preliminary results of the quantitative research of couples dynamic in Croatia, whose main objective was to determine the forms, prevalence and gender inequalities in performing mental work in households in Croatian society. Out of 74 measured mental load activities, we will focus on the ones with the largest gender gap and present the multivariate model that explains this gender gap using indicators of socioeconomic status of partners, index of gender inequality in intimate relationship, gender discrimination in primary socialization and the influence of traditional vs. egalitarian gender roles during upbringing. Our results contribute to better understanding of perpetuating patterns of gender inequalities in the private sphere to the disadvantage of women and indicate potential ways to reduce them.
