Sažetak
The talks aims at casting light on the ancient use of the colour term caerul(e)us, which has been classified in the analyses of Latin colour vocabulary as an emergent Basic Colour Term, covering various parts of the areas nowadays comprised by the English words „blue“, „green“, „white“, and „black“. Dictionary definitions are surveyed, as well as the state of the research, and corpus analysis is used to identify distribution and meanings of the term. Three semantic domains have emerged as central: „watery“, „celestial“, and „uneasy“. A semantic network for caeruleus, organised around these central domains according to the theory of prototypes, is proposed. If a basic difference between poetic and technical use is takan into account, the results of the analysis provide an explanation of seemingly incoherent diachronic development of the term’s meanings.
