Sažetak
Nowadays, freshwater ecosystems are contaminated with complex chemical mixtures due to increased urbanization and wastewater discharges. In addition, warming related to climate change can increase the toxicity of some chemicals in water making them more dangerous. Freshwater biodiversity is particularly sensitive to these stressors and their interactions. However, studies on cumulative effects of changing water temperatures and chemical pollutants on freshwater biodiversity are limited. In our studies, we aim at advancing the knowledge on single and combined effects of increased water temperature and chemical mixtures on primary producers and first level consumers in freshwater ecosystems. We conduct laboratory experiments with simplified freshwater food webs consisting of moss and caddisflies or macroinvertebrates in micro- and mesocosm settings, respectively. We perform various analyses such as total protein and lipid content, metabolome and lipidome profiling in order to evaluate the response of non-model aquatic macroinvertebrates to selected stressors at the molecular level. Our studies highlight the variability in the effects of both individual and multiple stressors on different species, their traits and life stages, as well as different modes of action of multiple stressors. Our studies emphasize the importance of thoroughly assessing the susceptibility of freshwater organisms to adverse effects of single and multiple stressors, particularly across different life stages and sexes, for effective management of freshwater ecosystems in the context of global change.
