Sažetak
“Dental twinning” is a developmental anomaly caused by congenital, inherited, acquired and/or idiopathic factors resulting in the union of two and, on more rare occasions, three adjacent teeth. The union itself is caused by the physical pressure between two adjacent teeth during their growth and development. Clinical literature indicates that “dental twinning” usually occurs in three different manners: germination (shizodonthia), fusion (synodonthia), and concrescence. Today, this anomaly is registered in 0.1-5% of teeth with an equal distribution between males and females with somewhat higher frequencies in individuals of Asian ancestry. However, archaeological examples of permanent “dental twinning” from Europe are still extremely rare. Here we present a case of fusion of permanent first and second right maxillary incisors observed in a middle-aged (30-40 years) male from the late medieval / early modern period site of Sisak in continental Croatia. In order to gain a better insight into this interesting case we employed several analytical methods: (i) macroscopic analysis, (ii) X-ray and Multislice computerized tomography (MDCT), and (iii) micro-CT analysis. The fused tooth has a single crown with a slight groove running along the lingual side. Radiographic examination confirmed that the teeth are completely fused involving both the crown and the root. The anomaly is unilateral as the left maxillary incisors have a normal morphology and are completely separated. This is the first archaeological case of permanent teeth fusion from Central/Southeastern Europe and one of the rare examples of such an anomaly in bioarchaeological record in general.
