Sažetak
Viral contagious diseases are recognized as important public health threats, not only by directly affecting humans, but also indirectly by affecting animals within the food production chain. Since the world population is increasing, food resources are continuously challenged by the growing demand for nutrients. Food of animal origin is an excellent source of proteins and provides micronutrients in forms that are easily digestible. Thus, animal breeding is an important part of agricultural production, as well as an income source, worldwide. In Croatia meat production contributes by 35% of the total agricultural production. One of the most damaging ongoing panzootics is African swine fever (ASF), a notifiable fatal infectious disease of domestic swine and wild boar. The latter is known to be the main reservoir of the disease in Europe. Even though ASF does not pose a direct threat to human health, its occurrence is followed by great economic losses caused by high morbidity and mortality rates, expensive eradication measures and a negative social impact due to losses of income for farmers and high prices of pork on the world market. The causative agent belongs to the Asfivirus genus of the Asfarviridae family. The virus remains viable for long periods in blood, feces, and tissues, especially uncooked or undercooked pork products. Direct contact, indirect contact, and ticks are the three modes of ASF transmission. No vaccine or treatment is available against ASF. Thus, prevention is based on early detection and strict biosecurity measures that can reduce the risk of outbreaks in swine farms and minimize contamination of environment and the likelihood of infection in wild boars. Biosecurity programmes are usually applied on commercial holdings. However, ecological and open farming due to possible contact with wild boars is often seen as a dead end in terms of prevention. This is the reason why all holdings should be included in biosecurity programmes.
