Sažetak
Among the most interesting monuments of residential architecture of the second half of the 19th century in today's Croatia is certainly the villa/mansion/castle of Archduke Ferdinand Maximilian of Habsburg, the eldest brother of Francis Joseph I, located on the island of Lokrum (Lacroma) near Dubrovnik. Conceived as a castle that would probably surpass in size the main Archduke's residence in Miramare, it was finally (re)built only as a kind of villa. It is not a completely new building, but an adaptation of a medieval Benedictine monastery founded in the 11th century, which has been privately owned since 1803. Archduke Ferdinand Maximilian and his wife Charlotte bought the monastery with the whole island in October 1859, originally to serve the acclimatization of plants brought by the Novarra ship from warmer regions. Very soon, as early as the end of 1859, however, a decision was made to adapt the monastery to a new archduke's residence. Until Maximilian's death in 1867, a number of architects would be involved in designing the adaptations. He first turned to the Viennese architect (Franz Xaver) Fröhlich. After his death, the work on Lokrum was taken over by the architect Rosenauer, and after his death by the architect Franz Xaver Segenschmid, one of the students of Friedrich von Schmidt. Finally, the interior of the castle was designed by Franz and Julius Hoffmann. Undoubtedly, Maximilian himself suggested certain solutions to the architects, in the way he had done earlier in Miramare. Designs for Lokrum envisaged building a series of towers, new neo-Gothic lavish additions, and the ruins of a church incorporated into the complex that would be surrounded by a garden. Had it been realized, on the very edge of the Habsburg/Austro- Hungarian Monarchy, one of the most lavish examples of 19th-century residential architecture of this state would be built. The aim of this presentation is to show the way in which the rebuilding of the monastery on Lokrum into Archduke’s residence was conceived and what was eventually realized. Special attention will be paid to unpublished interior projects that show a variety of stylistic solutions, (neo-Gothic, neo- Renaissance, neo-Moorish) and contemporary problems of modern preservation of Lokrum buildings.
