Sažetak
The primary goal of this chapter is to point out the elementary features of agriculture. What agriculture is, what are its functions and why is it still irreplaceable. Also, what is the reason behind the fact that this specific industrial branch gets the most subside in almost every country in the world. Readers will be introduced to some basic terms such as agrobiocenosa (and the difference from nature biocenosa), types of agriculture, and the ways in which agriculture can degrade the environment. At the same time, emphasis will be put on ways in which diverse types of agriculture can coexist with the environment. Food security and food safety are very relevant concepts nowadays - through this chapter they will be elaborated and their significance explained. Afterwards, the term ecological footprint will be defined, as well as the difference among diverse ways of agriculture forms can cause it. Pope Francis’s vision regarding the role of agriculture in protecting the environment in the encyclica Laudato si will be addressed separately. At the end of this chapter, we will try to state, through practical examples, how to apply the encyclica Laudato si in the territory of the Republic of Croatia.
