Sažetak
The circumstances under which the early medieval bishoprics of Kotor, Dubrovnik, Split, Zadar, Rab and Osor originated and evolved are studied in this paper. The proceedings of the Second church council of Nicaea held in 787, hold the signatures of four Dalmatian bishops: John of Salona (Split), Lawrence of Osor, Ursus of Rab and John of Kotor. A connection of the said historical record with artworks in stone preserved in their respective churches, firmly dated to the same period, is attempted in order to illuminate the earliest history of respective cities.
