Sažetak
Marine organic matter (OM) is affected by environmental conditions. OM is a complex mixture of organic compounds in dissolved (DOM) and particulate (POM) fractions with different surface active properties (Ciglenečki et al. 2020). Surface active substances (SAS) are mainly of biological origin, derived from phytoplankton and microbial activities, as well as from zooplankton feeding. The DOC normalized surfactant activity is a valuable parameter (NSA=SAS/DOC) for monitoring changes in the quality of DOC at spatial and temporal scales (Ciglenečki et al. 2023). Comparison of NSA values of marine samples with those of the selected model substances typical of the studied systems allows a rough assessment of the properties of OM, i.e., the reactivity of DOC. Environmental changes influenced by climate variability have a greater impact on small water bodies such as lakes, bays and estuaries. The unique marine Rogoznica Lake (RL) on the Adriatic coast can be highlighted as an ideal study site for monitoring the influence of different environmental conditions on the properties of DOC within the water column (Simonović et al., 2023). This eutrophic, stratified, and euxinic marine lake is strongly influenced by climate variability, which is manifested in warming of the water column, increased deoxygenation and accumulation of toxic sulfides and ammonia, and shifts in the mixing regime (Ciglenečki et al. 2015 ; Čanković et al. 2019). In this study, we discuss the long-term (1996- 2022) dynamics of organic matter (DOC, SAS, NSA, POC) in RL and noticeable changes in their properties as an indicator of pronounced eutrophication accelerated by changing environmental conditions. Our results suggest a shift to more hydrophobic and reactive OM types. The resulting long-term data sets, collected at a unique marine sampling site with variable physicochemical conditions, contribute to a better understanding of organic carbon dynamics in a changing marine environment.
