Sažetak
György Ligeti’s birth centenary is an inspiring point in time to review and rethink his overall impact on artistic production in general. In Croatia, Ligeti’s work seems to be well represented in concert halls, particularly thanks to his continuous presence in the programmes of the Music Biennale Zagreb since its first edition in May 1961. The influence of the newly established international New Music festival, which has been held regularly since then, by far exceeded the boundaries of music, both within the festival programme itself and outside it. Art historians emphasize the encouraging role of the Music Biennale for the visual artists of the time, as well as the events such as the exhibition Nove tendencije (New Tendencies), held in Zagreb in the fall of the same year, that actually represented the foundation of an international artistic movement under the same name. The Music Biennale Zagreb initiated systematic cooperation with the Darmstadt International Summer Courses, where several then young, today notable Croatian composers encountered Ligeti and learned from him. It is not surprising that Ligeti’s work soon became a part of the academic curricula, equally in compositional, theoretical, and performance studies. Considering the interdisciplinary overarching theme of the conference, the presentation will outline the reception of Ligeti and his compositional output within the Music Biennale Zagreb and in Croatian art in general. Some features of Ligeti’s music and theory, such as spatiality and phonological aspects of spoken text, will be given special attention and brought into connection with Croatian composers that worked with and learned from Ligeti in Darmstadt. The recollections of one of them, the composer, writer, and pianist Dubravko Detoni (1937) will portray Ligeti as a lecturer and a teacher. Finally, the continuing impact of Ligeti’s work on Croatian visual art will be illustrated by the works of the multimedia artist Damir Očko (1977), whose art and creative considerations are largely influenced by the works of composers and music theorists such as Ligeti.
