Sažetak
The aim of this paper is to show on the example of pre-modern Korea what challenges there existed in obtaining the knowledge of Literary Chinese and the kinds of impact it later received from local ideologies and languages, whether it be in its usage, teaching, or as means of communication with speakers of other languages. Narratives of both Chinese and Korean participants in pre-modern Literary Chinese world will serve to show how this process was not always smooth, and how despite the seemingly unquestionable status of Literary Chinese, a debate was present on its merits and disadvantages, and its overall suitability for the Korean context well before its final supplantation by Hangeul.
