Sažetak
Online teaching involves teaching using the form of information and communication technology (ICT) that is organised entirely at a distance. This concept has been around for decades, and numerous universities worldwide have been organising lectures exclusively online for many years. However, due to the proclamation of a global pandemic caused by the Sars-CoV-2 virus, the universities in Croatia were forced to replace the usual forms of teaching with an online format. Since the extremely large changes in education and life in general were imposed in a very short period of time, the aim of this study was to investigate the characteristics of online teaching, as well as the students’ experiences with the individual learning processes in an online environment, social interaction during the online lectures, course outcomes, and the quality of social life at the beginning of the pandemic. The research was conducted in two phases. In the first phase, a focus group method was used in which nine students participated. The information from the focus group was used for the creation of the online questionnaire. In July 2020, the questionnaire was administered to 308 students, including 12 students with additional learning needs. The final sample consisted of the students from all major Croatian universities and all years of study were equally covered. Although the students were mostly satisfied, they expressed concern about the possible lack of competence, knowledge, and practical experience. The good technical characteristics of online courses, more advanced learning processes including attention and motivation, and good social interaction during online lectures contribute significantly to better knowledge, competence, and satisfaction as a part of the course outcomes. Interestingly, such advanced learning processes, as well as good social interaction during the online lectures contribute to a better perceived quality of social life. Unfortunately, the majority of students with additional learning needs did not feel that their needs were adequately recognised and adhered to.
