Sažetak
Slavenska misao (Slavic Thought) was a journal published in the Croatian language in Trieste from 1903 to 1909. Before that, it was published in Pula under various names (Il Pensiero Slavo, La pensée slave, Slavenska misao). Epitomizing Pan-Slavic spirit, it dealt with Croatian culture and history. An analysis of orthographic and linguistic features reveals interesting communicational aspects of this journal, which was intended for Italianized Croats and those of Croatian descent who were not fluent in the standard variety of Croatian. This paper, which focuses on analysing those features, will contribute to understanding the standardization processes that the Croatian language underwent in Istria where, due to social and political circumstances, it took a different course than in the other parts of Croatia. The paper will also show the level of congruency between the usus and the codification standard. By examining texts that address linguistic issues ranging from the name of the language to its status in all state and public institutions, we will shed some light on the early-20th-century language policies in this area.
