Sažetak
1. Background of the study Radiophotoluminescent (RPL) glass dosimeter is based on RPL phenomenon of silver activated phosphate glass: when Ag+ activated phosphate glass is exposed to ionising radiation, stable RPL centres appear and luminescence is emitted after exposure to UV light. The luminescence intensity is proportional to the amount of irradiation and therefore such glass, after dosimetric characterisation, can be used as dosimeter. Important advantage of RPL in comparison to other luminescent dosimeters (such as optically stimulated luminescent (OSL) or the most widely used thermoluminescent (TL) dosimeter) is possibility of multiple readings without loss of the signal. The RPL dosimeters are applied in clinical dosimetry as well as in individual and environmental monitoring. 2. Methodology RPL dosimetry system from Asahi Techno Glass (ATG) Corporation, Japan consisting of dosimeter type SC-1 and FGD-202 reader has been introduced into environmental monitoring (in addition to TL dosimetry system) at RBI since 2005. SC-1 is composed of a flat (16 x 16 x 1.5 mm3) glass detector designated as FD-7 shielded with the energy compensating tin filter and placed in a plastic holder. Up to now the following studies/activities have been carried out: a) investigation of dosimetric properties and measuring performance in laboratory conditions (uniformity/batch homogenity, reproducibility, linearity, detection threshold, energy dependence in air, on phantom and in water, light sensitivity for photon irradiations and response to neutrons as well) b) participation in several international and bilateral intercomparisons for environmental dosimetry c) environmental monitoring in the vicinity of Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) Krško (ongoing since 2012) d) participation in the investigation of the properties and uncertainty of different passive dosimetry systems used by different institutions for the environmental monitoring in the case of a nuclear or radiological incident within the framework of EMPIR-16ENV04 PREPAREDNESS project (2017-2020) 3. Results In this contribution the basic principle of RPL and advantages/challenges for aplication of RPL dosimetry in environmental monitoring will be reviewed and discussed. In addition, the main results of the RBI studies will be presented and discussed. 4. Conclusion All characteristics investigated and intercomparisons showed that RPL dosimeter type SC-1 can be succesfully used for environmental monitoring.Further investigations of the dosimeters and influence of the dosimetry procedures as well are expected to improve knowledge and more reliable usage of RPL dosimetry systems in environmental monitoring.
