Sažetak
Introduction: Thrombocytopenia refers to the count of platelets lower than 150 × 109/L. The incidence is estimated at 3 – 4 per 10 000 inhabitants yearly, with mildly increased incidence in women and peaking in children and patients over 60 years old. Immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) is the most frequent immune mediated thrombocytopenia in children, with yearly incidence of symptomatic cases estimated between 3 – 8 cases per 100 000 children. Materials and methods: The research is established as a retrospective study on all children hospitalised at the Department of Hematology and Oncology, 110 children in total, Peadiatric Clinic, Clinical Hospital Centre Osijek from 2017 to 2021 for the purposes of medical treatment of thrombocytopenia. Results: Within the period from 2017 to 2021 a total of 110 children was hospitalised due to thrombocytopenia, and their proportion in the total number of hospitalised children at the Pediatric Clinic ranged from 1.26 % in 2017 to 0.75 % in 2021. The highest number of hospitalized children was in 2017, the number of hospitalized children was 35. Conclusion: In the observed five-year period, analysing all children hospitalized at the Pediatric Clinic, the percentage of children hospitalized under the leading diagnosis of thrombocytopenia at the Department of Hematology and Oncology was around 1 % of the total hospitalized, which is significant when is known that around 50 % of hospitalizations in pediatrics are caused by respiratory and gastrointestinal viruses.
