Sažetak
Introduction: Thrombocytopenia refers to the count of platelets lower than 150 × 109/L. The categorization of thrombocytopenia causes is based on the pathological mechanisms leading to thrombocytopenia. The etiology of thrombocytopenia is divided into thrombocytopenias caused by increased destruction and caused by decreased platelet formation. Asymptomatic or minimally symptomatic thrombocytopenia does not require treatment, while severe and symptomatic thrombocytopenia may be treated with IVIG, corticosteroids, platelet concentrate and/or splenectomy. Materials and methods: The research is established as a retrospective study on all children hospitalised at the Department of Hematology and Oncology, 110 children in total, Peadiatric Clinic, Clinical Hospital Centre Osijek from 2017 to 2021 for the purposes of medical treatment of thrombocytopenia. Results: Out of total of 110 patients treated over the period of five years, 83 children were under observation, while 27 received a certain kind of therapy. Simultaneously, a number of children had the same cause of thrombocytopenia (e.g. acute lymphoblastic leukemia with respiratory and/or gastroenterological infection). 22 out of 27 children with introduced therapy, which is more than 80 %, had immune thrombocytopenia. Conclusion: Comparing the causes of thrombocytopenia in children under observation and children with introduced therapy no statistical difference was found, except in children diagnosed with immune thrombocytopenia.
