Sažetak
Social mix, defined as the presence of different social groups within a neighborhood, has been a burning topic in academia and public policy in recent decades. Although the idea of desirable socio-economically and ethnically heterogeneous communities has received much criticism, there is a consensus around the thesis that spatial inequalities are bad for the inhabitants. In Western and Northern Europe post-war housing estates stand out as areas of segregated, minority-populated and cheap housing and have been the site of numerous attempts at reconstruction with the idea of social mixing. Large housing estates in Central and Eastern Europe had different development pathways. In line with the socialist ideology the new neighborhoods were inhabited by various social strata, from working class to nomenclature. The diverse composition of these estates has persisted to this day, but due to the systematic neglect the estates are threatened by physical and social deterioration, and thus endangering of social mix. Through quantitative research on the quality of life in post-socialist and socialist housing estates in Croatia and Slovenia, which will be conducted in 2022, we will investigate social mix in a post- socialist context. Based on types of residential satisfaction and residential mobility (called ‘springboarders’ and ‘trapped’ residents) we will assess whether the existing mixed composition in the old estates is endangered in the long run.
