Sažetak
Demands in material sustainability have increased demand for bio-based polymers like poly (lactic acid) (PLA), which are recognized as a suitable alternative to fossil-based polymers because they have a less environmental impact. PLA is an aliphatic polyester, usually produced by industrial polycondensation of lactic acid or ring-opening polymerization of lactide. Melt processing is the main technique used for the manufacturing of PLA components for the medical, packaging, and textile industries. The development of processing methods is important for broadening the application of polylactide polymers. Today, processing technologies of PLA include injection moulding, hot pressing, spinning, blow moulding, foam moulding, electrospinning, 3D printing, and so on. The development of mechanical properties, structure in processes, and an appropriate application are also discussed. This review summarizes variations in these properties during PLA processing (i.e. thermal degradation and recyclability), biodegradation and aging.
