Sažetak
Contemporary teaching, just like what we call traditional today, includes several fundamental stakeholders. First of all, it is the teacher as a motivator and instructor on the one hand, and the student as a receiver of information and one who actively participates in the teaching process on the other hand. Various factors play an important role in the process of mastering the content of any subject, one of which is the material that students use for learning and the way that material is designed. The Law on Textbooks (2018) clearly states that textbooks for class teaching, i.e. in the younger grades of elementary school, should be work-oriented and should be aimed at discovering knowledge and encouraging more creative ways of solving tasks. This is precisely why the aim of this work is to present an analysis of the language and style of the textbooks and work materials (workbooks) of the first grade of elementary school in the Croatian language, mathematics and nature and society. A comparative discourse analysis of the frequency vocabulary, lexical density and lexical diversity showed that the textbook materials from Nature and Society are the most lexically diverse, that the Croatian textbook materials contain sentences with the largest number of words, and that the most frequent nouns are also the key concepts that students they need to master, and the most frequent verbs are related to the students' knowledge levels, that is, learning outcomes in a particular subject.
