Sažetak
Research on work-family conflict highlights a stronger work-family conflict for women when compared to men, especially when working a higher number of weekly working hours and living in a larger household (Crompton & Lyonette, 2006 ; Öun, 2012). With regards to employment, the Croatian labor market exhibits lower employment rates for women and a higher proportion of women working in part-time work, while at the same time the domain of unpaid work shows slower progress toward gender equality principally in the domain of care for family members and household labour. Such current situation in the Croatian context has been thoroughly researched, however it has not been more closely examined when coupled with working conditions and varieties of household organizations. An inclination toward extended family living arrangements poses the question on how this influences the perceived work-family conflict by men and women across various domains. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to examine work–family conflict among working parents with underage children with a strong emphasis on the gender dimension and a special attention on varieties of household organizations. The main research questions we analyse in this paper are concerned with the variations in the work-family conflict among men and women with regard to the sociodemographic characteristics (e.g. education, age) ; household organization (e.g. type of household, number of children, household size, division of household chores) ; working conditions (employment status, flexible working hours) and satisfaction with public services. The survey data used in this presentation was gathered on a nationally representative sample of parents with minor children (N=3600), obtained through a large-scale mixed methods research project “Impact of public policies on family and work life quality and the demographic situation in Croatia – spaces of change”. While the analyses of the influence of working conditions and household organization are currently still being conducted, the preliminary results of regression analyses show that women in general report greater work-family conflict than men, which is aggravated when experiencing precarious working conditions. The results also confirm that women’s role as a primary carer in the family leads to increase of work-family conflict experience. Among the surveyed parents, paid help at home is not represented, and a third of the respondents believe that public services are not adapted to the needs of parents, which places Croatia alongside other post-socialist countries with a high proportion of unpaid female work and with underdeveloped social policy measures.
