Sažetak
It was supposed that Alexander Friedrich Kurz (born June 6, 1950), as the invited speaker, join us in Varaždin on the 2nd Congress of Croatian Alzheimer Alliance in person, and speak about our former and future EU projects regarding people with dementia, but unfortunately, he passed away on January 29, 2023. Alexander Kurz received his medical degree at Ludwig Maximilians Universität Munich, Germany, and has been active in the field of geriatric psychiatry as a clinician, researcher, and teacher. He was a professor of psychiatry at the University Hospital of Technical University Munich (TUM-MED). He started working at TUM-MED in 1980. In 1985, he co-founded one of the first memory clinics in Europe, and this memory clinic is still running at TUM-MED. In 1986, he initiated efforts for setting up the local Alzheimer's Association in the city of Munich which then led to the formation of the national Alzheimer's Association. From 1989 to 2015, he was director of the Center for Cognitive Disorders at TUM-MED. His scientific interests included causes, risk, and protective factors for neurodegenerative diseases ; early identification and differential diagnosis of these disorders ; design and evaluation of non-pharmacological interventions for people with dementia and their carers ; diagnosis and management of uncommon dementias. In addition to his teaching and research activities, Prof. Kurz has acted as a principal investigator in numerous clinical drug trials. After retiring from clinical work, Prof. Kurz has planned and coordinated European research and development projects including the JPND-funded „Research to Assess Policies and Strategies for Dementia in the Young“ (RHAPSODY), the initiative „Improving Dementia Care in the Danube Region“ (INDEED) supported by the INTERREG-Danube Transnational Programme and the Erasmus + project „Stepping Up Digital Competence in Dementia Education“ (STUDICODE). During these years, his main research interests were the improvement of pharmacological and non- pharmacological treatments for people with dementia including carer support. Prof. Kurz has authored or co-authored more than 350 peer- reviewed scientific papers and book chapters. Until his passing, Dr. Kurz acted as a long-standing board member of the German Alzheimer Association - he joined the board in 1997. He was a board member of Alzheimer Europe from 1998 to 2004. Alexander was our friend, he dedicated all his life to people with dementia, and his great work will be the inspiration for all of us. Our heartfelt condolences go out to his wife, and to all of his family, friends, and colleagues.
