Sažetak
Two most recognisable wetland areas in the Danube River catchment are Kopački rit, located in the middle part of the Danube River course, and Danube Delta in the area of the mouth into the Black Sea. Due to exceptional biological and ecological values, these areas are protected at national level as the Kopački rit Nature Park in Croatia and the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve in Romania. Both areas are also designated as the Ramsar Sites, the Biosphere Reserves under the UNESCO’s Man and the Biosphere Programme, and sites of Natura 2000 ecological network. Vascular flora diversity of Kopački rit and Danube Delta has been analysed from the taxonomic and ecological viewpoint. Flora diversity of Kopački rit comprises 572 species (11% of Croatian flora), and of Danube Delta comprises 1, 031 species (27% of Romanian flora). There are 56 alien species, and 26 invasive alien species in the flora of Kopački rit, and 163 alien species, and 36 invasive alien species in the flora of Danube Delta. Differences in the floristic characteristics between Kopački rit and Danube Delta are mainly determined by their biogeographic position in Europe.
