Sažetak
At the beginning of the 21st century, the European railway system is trying to win a better position on the market of transportation services through organisational transformation, and technological and functional integration of the railway infrastructure. For success, it is necessary to increase the productivity, reduce the operation expenditures and make the price of using infrastructure facilities competitive. The development of technology and automated diagnostic methods along with the implementation of information technology allow the application of computer expert systems as support to decision-making in management and maintenance of the railway infrastructure. At present, there are expert systems for individual groups of facilities, and the aim is to unify the subsystems into an integral system for an integrated railway infrastructure. The function of expert systems is to provide optimal financial and scheduling suggestions of the planned activities on the considered sections of the railway network, based on the diagnostics and other data about the condition of the facilities and simulation of the behaviour depending on the future repair works in accordance with the input technical and safety rules and standards and the fundamental assumptions of the maintenance policy. The development of expert systems requires input of valid diagnostic methods, technical rules, standards and simulation models, and the implementation requires competent professional interpretation of the results and supervision during realisation.
