Sažetak
Recent field research of traditional beliefs in supernatural beings (werewolves, fairies, witches, and mòras) among the inhabitants of the rural Dalmatian hinterland shows that such beliefs are still present within certain groups. While talking about the existence, appearance, actions and meaning of supernatural beings, interlocutors often stress significant role of the members of the Catholic clergy who either forbid beliefs in such beings – labeling them superstition – or, on the other hand, actively participate in fighting against such creatures. The priests who do not believe in “traditional” supernatural beings are often considered ignorant and misguided by the interlocutors while those priests who help people in solving supernatural problems, and especially those who sometimes act as supernatural beings themselves, are considered relevant. Therefore, by using examples from the field, as well as older archival material, I will present and analyze the image of “religious syncretism” present in Dalmatian hinterland today. Furthermore, I will point towards sometimes contradictory attitudes of the Catholic Church and its clergy toward traditional beliefs in supernatural beings but also the relationship of the believers (interlocutors) toward the actions of the particular priests. Finally, I will argue that even those priests who look “favorably” at the beliefs in supernatural beings, in the end contribute to the disintegration of the beliefs in witches and werewolves which are gradually being reconfigured and eventually substituted by the beliefs in angels and saints.
