Sažetak
Whenever we talk about what an image is about or what it represents or seeks to achieve, we are referring to something other than what, in essence, the particular iconic object qua object is. This means that being an image is ontologically different from being-representation-of-something let alone being that same thing. In everyday use of the term, “image” never corresponds to a pure visuality, to a pure visual phenomenon or to anything practically seen before one's eyes: the image must be in place of something that is seen in it, it must be ontologically different from what is seen and must be other than what is seen. Images are not what appears to be in them, regardless of how realistic they are and regardless of the fact that, sometimes, the illusion of reality evoked by certain types of images can generate a lot of confusion in those who observe them. As long as it is possible to distinguish between reality and (iconic) illusion, visual experience can exist in numerous degrees of intensity between the purely phenomenal (that which is perceived) and the materially iconic (that which is physically present). Here I would like to address a characteristic of the image that we often accept as obvious but which, with the development of digital reproduction technologies, is becoming one of the most important problems of modern image theory. This is the principle of otherness according to which the image has a meaning as a special phenomenon of creation and transformation of visible reality, provided that the observer is able to notice a split or a detachment between the image itself on one side and what he sees in it from the other, thus leading to a structural and ontological discontinuity.
