Sažetak
Calf length socks are knitted next-to-skin-type garments and worn inside the shoes. As the socks rubs within the shoes, they have to fulfil high demands of abrasion resistance. Abrasion, which is the unavoidable problem, usually occurs on the heel, sole and toes of the socks, where hole or thinning occur. As the abrasion resistance of socks depends on their construction and fibres used, it is very important to select yarns for their production. The casual men’s socks are usually made of cotton yarns and blended with polyamide and/or Lycra. The applicability of viscose, modal and lyocell fibres (man-made artificial fibres from cellulose which provide exceptional contact comfort and have better hydrophilicity than cotton) in knitting of socks is insufficiently researched. In this paper abrasion resistance of medium sized socks, made in the highest percentage of ring spun cotton, viscose, modal and lyocell yarns of the same linear density in full plating by polyamide yarns were evaluated in comparison with socks made of polyester. The abrasion resistance of sock plain knits sampled from the sole and heel were investigated before and after five repeated washing and drying cycles, using Martindale abrasion tester according to the EN 13770, method 1. The influence of fibre type and physical properties of socks, produced under the same conditions, on the obtained results were evaluated. The results indicated that sock abrasion resistance strongly depends on fibre types used. In the socks made of cellulose fibres, increase in the abrasion resistance were determined after the simulated domestic care.
