Sažetak
Since 2007, zooplankton studies have been conducted in the area of the Kopački rit Nature Park (Croatia) and in the Croatian part of the Danube, and groups of rotifers, copepods and cladocerans are continuously studied. The aim of long-term monitoring is to determine how the geomorphology of different localities, the hydrology of the area and, in the context of climate change, changes in the hydrological regime and the occurrence of increasing environmental extremes affect the organisation of zooplankton community structure. Long-term studies have shown that community composition and relationships among zooplankton groups are indicative of the trophic state of the water body and can serve as a good indicator of ecological status. A recent approach in zooplankton research is based on the application of functional groups, which has contributed to a better understanding of community dynamics in lentic and lotic systems, where different mechanisms of zooplankton regulation have been observed depending on biotic and abiotic factors. In recent years, the effects of ubiquitous pollution of water bodies with microplastics, the dynamics of plastisphere development and their influence on zooplankton community development have been studied, indicating the intensity of anthropogenic impacts and the need for more efficient management and protection of freshwater ecosystems.
