Sažetak
The site Kaptol, located in Požega Valley, in Northern Croatia, has been recognized as the central Early Iron Age centre located on the southern border of the Eastern Hallstatt Circle. This complex site consists of two burial mound cemeteries and a hillfort settlement located on two positions: Kaptol-Čemernica and Kaptol-Gradci. First three stratigraphic probes opened on the hillfort in 2001 indicated significant levels of activity in the settlement. From 2011, Center for Prehistoric Research and a team based at the University of Zagreb started to systematically conduct excavation campaigns on the Kaptol-Gradci hillfort. Five trenches that were placed on the hillfort plateau (Fig. 1) exposed shallow cultural layers probably devastated by erosion and intense forest activities. Excavation campaigns of the sixth trench located on the terrace slope revealed a presence of two distinct settlement horizons on the hillfort. Preliminary results, based on the material cultural remains, have shown that the older horizon is contemporary with burials under the mounds and the that the younger one belongs to the Late Early Iron Age period and the transi- tional horizon between Late Hallstatt and the Early La Tène period. In 2017, as a part of the Iron-Age-Danube project activities, the research of the latter horizon continued in order to better define the context of the features defined during previous campaigns and to distinguish, if possible, between one or more levels of settlement occupation. Furthermore, a multidisciplinary approach was used during the course of the settlement research. In the scope of the ENTRANS project, LiDAR scanning and a series of systematic geophysical surveys were conducted on the hillfort. They have shown elaborate structures existing beneath the ground surface on the whole of the settlement perimeter, indicating a highly organized settlement and implying the existence of a centre of considerable economic strength in this elusive transitional period.
