Sažetak
Based on long-term experience in teaching English for Social Work courses, several needs analyses and evaluations of the courses, a new textbook was prepared to better meet the needs of future social work professionals. It is divided into 12 units relevant for the fields of social work and social policy as follows: What is social work?, History of social work, What is social policy, Education of social workers, Employment of social workers, Demographics, Social work ethics, Social work and human rights, Poverty and social exclusion, Social workers and family protection, Care for the elderly and Care for the disabled. The first part of each unit provides an introduction to the topic, while the second and third parts comprise extracts from different authentic texts related to social work and social policy. The texts have been carefully selected to make the textbook as interesting and diverse as possible and to stimulate discussions. For that purpose, different text types have been included, ranging from newspaper articles, biographical texts, statistical reports and news releases to the extracts from the legal texts, codes of ethics and conventions. All texts are accompanied by numerous exercises aimed to encourage the readers to express themselves orally and in writing using relevant vocabulary. A special attention was paid to mastering collocations and phrases and to translation skills. The exercises should enable a better comprehension of the topics and research tasks at the end of each unit should motivate the students for further reading and research. A monolingual Glossary of key terms and an English- Croatian Glossary of key terms used in the textbook have been prepared in order to help the students in their work.
