Sažetak
This paper provides a qualitative and quantitative comparative analysis of translation of non- standard language in Irvine Welsh's novel Trainspotting (1993) into Russian and Croatian. Trainspotting is Welsh's most famous work, and it gained cult status followed by the release of the film with the same title in 1996. Welsh's opus is heavily centred around Scotland, and he is well- known for using Scottish dialect in his work. The goal of this paper is to analyse how the Croatian and Russian translators dealt with the non- standard language in the source text, given its importance for the general atmosphere of the source text and the problems of translating dialect. The aim of the quantitative analysis is to determine which categories of non-standard language the translators used in Russian and Croatian and whether there are differences in the frequency of the use of these categories. The aim of the qualitative analysis is to present some specific examples of how the translators managed the translation of non-standard language, which strategies they used, and which effect these strategies had on the translation itself.
