Long-term oxygen therapy is used in patients with chronic respiratory failure. The most common cause of chronic respiratory failure is chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The course of the disease is progressive despite therapy, and leads to espiratory disability and reduced quality of life. SF-36 is a generic questionnaire for the evaluation of the quality of life, and the parameters measured are not specific to the disease, so it is possible to compare the quality of life in patients with various diseases. The aim of the study was to compare the health related quality of life (HRQL) measured by SF-36 for two groups of patients who use chronic replacement therapy: patients on long- term oxygen therapy (LTOT) and patients on chronic haemodialysis (CH). In patients with COPD on LTOT, we examined the association between the dimensions of SF-36 with parameters of pulmonary function. The study included 51 patients on LTOT, 47 (92%) of them had COPD diagnosis. The control group was 52 patients on CH. The results showed that both groups were comparable for sex distribution and duration of chronic replacement therapy. Patients on LTOTwere significantly older and had a significantly lower dimension of physical functioning in comparison with those in CH (p<0.001). In patients with COPD on LTOT postbronchodilatatory forced expiratory volume in one second and arterial oxygen tension significantly positively correlated with the dimension of physical functioning (R +0.469/p 0.002 and R +0.301/p 0.039). Limited ability of physical functioning in patients on LTOT can be explained by dyspnea as the core symptom of pulmonary patients. Forced expiratory volume in the first second and arterial oxygen tension reflect the severity of lung disease so their correlation with the dimension of physical functioning is expected.
