Sažetak
The effect of repeated administration of clenbuterol in a growth-promoting dose on hepatocellular integrity of female pigs was assessed by correlating histopahologic lesions in the liver of treated pigs with changes in serum  -glutamyltransferase (GGT), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activities. The experiments were carried out in 12 (6 control and 6 treated) female pigs of known breed, aged 6-7 months, body mass 80-100 kg. Experimental animals were treated with clenbuterol (10  g/kg body mass, intravenously, twice daily) for 25 days. On day 25, blood and liver specimens were collected. In the experimental group of animals increased serum ALP and ALT (p<0.01) compared with the control group were found, whereas serum AST and GGT activities showed no statistically significant changes. Histologically, hepatocyte degeneration and vacuolization and hyperplastic cholangitis were detected in the livers. Biochemical and histopathologic findings suggested that repeated administration of clenbuterol to female pigs in a growth- promoting dose could adversely affect the functional activities of this parenchymatous organ.
