Aim: We aimed to assess the concerns of parents of adolescent orthodontic patients treated with the fixed appliance during the COVID-19 pandemic and to assess whether personality traits, education level and work from home were predictors of the parental concerns. Material and methods: Parents of adolescent patients undergoing orthodontic treatment with the fixed appliance were given a questionnaire containing questions with demographic data, and questions about the concern they feel with regard to their child's treatment duration and results, the risk of becoming infected with the coronavirus, as well as concerns about the general effect of the pandemic on their child. Items were answered on a Likert-scale from 1 to 5. Participants were also given the Big Five Inventory-10. The latent structure was determined using exploratory factor analysis (EFA) with promax rotation. The Big Five personality traits, educational level and work from home were tested as predictors of the latent constructs in hierarchical regression analysis. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS 22.0 (IBM, Armonk, USA). Results: In total, 180 parents (63.8% female) of a median age of 46 years (IQR 42-50 years) completed the questionnaire. 56.1% had secondary school level of education or lower, and 20% worked from home. EFA revealed four factors: parents’ treatment concern [PTC (median 1.2, IQR 1.0-1.8)], parents’ awareness of the importance of measures [PAM (median 4.8, IQR 4.0- 5.0)], parents’ concern about their child with regards to the pandemic [PCC (median 2.3, IQR 1.7- 3.0)], and parents’ concern about the pandemic [PCP (median 2.7, IQR 2.0-3.7)]. Male sex, lower conscientiousness and more frequent following of the news were predictors of PTC (p<0.05). Higher neuroticism and lower extraversion were predictors of PCP (p<0.05). Higher neuroticism and more frequent following of the news were predictors of PCC (p<0.05). Parents’ education level and work from home were not significant predictors of any of the constructs. Conclusion: Neuroticism is a vulnerability factor for parental concern about their child’s orthodontic treatment during the COVID-19 pandemic, while extraversion has a protective role. However, the parents in our sample showed a relatively low concern about the treatment of their child, which may indicate that the pandemic did not cause significant disruption to the services provided to orthodontic patients after the lockdown of the spring of 2020.
