Sažetak
Aim: Previous research on orthodontic patients' perceptions of the COVID-19 pandemic was conducted in the early stages when there were still many unknowns about the nature of COVID-9 and during the limited availability of health services. We aimed to assess the impact of the pandemic on the attitudes of adolescents undergoing orthodontic treatment during the normalization of health care services and determine whether personality traits were predictors of the patients' attitudes. Materials and Methods: Participants aged from 10 to 18 years undergoing orthodontic treatment with the fixed appliance were given a self-administered questionnaire. Section 1 contained demographic data and section 2 contained items about the concern they feel with regard to treatment duration and results, as well as the risk of becoming infected with the coronavirus. Items were answered on a Likert-scale from 1 to 5. Participants were also given the Big Five Inventory-10. The latent structure was determined using exploratory factor analysis (EFA) with promax rotation. The Big Five personality traits were tested as predictors of the latent constructs in hierarchical regression analysis. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS (version 22.0 ; IBM, Armonk, USA). Results: 185 patients (57.3% female) of a median age of 15 (IQR 13-16) completed the questionnaire. Regarding school attendance, 79.5% of participants attended school in person, 14.6% attended classes from home, and 5.9% attended classes partly at school and partly from home. 57.8% had to isolate at least once. 25.4% had to cancel an orthodontic appointment due to self-isolation and 4.3% had to cancel an appointment more than once. Two factors were revealed in EFA: treatment concern [TC (median 1.4, IQR 1.1-2.0)] and awareness of the importance of measures [AM (median 4.5, IQR 3.8-5.0)]. Personality traits were not predictors of TC. Younger age, lower extraversion and more frequent following of the news were predictors of AM (p<0.05). Conclusion: Adolescent orthodontic patients had a relatively low concern about their orthodontic treatment during the COVID-19 pandemic and a high awareness of the importance of infection control measures. Older and more extroverted adolescents may need additional encouragement for better adherence to measures of controlling the spread of SARS-CoV2 in an orthodontic setting.
