Sažetak
Zara was, like other eastern Adriatic communes, in the late medieval period marked by the so-called process of democratization of private legal documents, which has contributed to the increasing recording of various types of diplomatic documents that offer a wealth of data for studying the daily life of Dalmatian communes and creating an image of the processes which strengthened their urbanization. At the same time, merchant trade gained more and more importance in the 14 th century and as such brought the merchant into the position of trading not only with various goods, but also with his own social and political status. This article will, therefore, be based on two sources – two inventories of goods of the Zaratin 14 th century merchants from the collection named Inventaria ex collectione Magnificae Communitatis Iadre, which combines Zaratin inventories from 1325 to 1385. Inventories of goods are a valuable diplomatic source that provides aggregated data on the movable and immovable property (bona mobilia et bona immobilia) of the deceased. Thus, the focus of this article will be on the category of recorded bona mobilia that will provide a case study with the insight into the degree of material culture of the subjects of this study, but also their social role that allowed them a certain kind of mobility within and between strictly defined structures of medieval society. The inventories of Fumiça Salvagnela and the Lotti condam Venimbeni de Florentina will clearly point out some aspects of everyday life in the 14 th century Zara. The main research method will be based on the quantification of data, which will then be qualitatively processed to indicate the cultural, economic, and social determination of the individual. This article is a part of ongoing research of published and unpublished diplomatic documents which will provide an insight into the overall degree of the Zaratin 14 th century material culture and will answer the questions relating everyday life of its citizens.
