Sažetak
Introduction Today, childhood obesity is one of the major public health problems in the world. In Croatia, every third school aged child is overweight. Given that obese children are candidates for obesity in adulthood and that obesity is a risk factor for several chronic non-communicable diseases, it is very important to recognize the problem and start prevention as early as possible, in early childhood. The aim of this study is to determine the proportion of overweight and obese children in a kindergarten in city of Virovitica. Methods This research was conducted by analyzing the data provided to us by the kindergarten Cvrčak from Virovitica, which conducts measurements of children attending kindergarten twice a year. Data from the 2017/2018 school year were taken (two measurements), 2018/2019 (two measurements) and one measurement for the school year 2019/2020. Results and discussion School year 2017/2018 17.2% of children were overweight and 6.9% were obese. In the second measurement of the same year, 16.7% of children were overweight and 6.3% were obese. In the school year 2018/2019 15% of the children measured were overweight, while 4.4% of the children were obese. In the second measurement of the same year, 13.3% of the children were overweight while 5.1 % were obese. 17.5% of respondents were overweight and 7.3% obese in 2019/2020. The second measurement that school year was canceled due to the Covid-19 pandemic and the measures that followed it. Conclusion Although most respondents in this measurement are normal body weight for their age, it should be taken into account that the respondents are preschool children and that is very important what habits they adopt in that period of life. Obese children are more likely to develop some chronic diseases later in life and this leads to the need for drug treatment throughout their whole life. Promoting physical activity and a healthy lifestyle is one of the most important tasks of public health. Key words: Obesity, public health, preschool children, physical activity
