Sažetak
Research shows that bilinguals do not need training to act as natural translators in the sense that their “rudimentary ability to mediate” (Lörscher, 1991) and facilitate communication in today’s multilingual communities can be seen as a universal human skill —“part and parcel of mankind’s basic linguistic equipment” (Wilss, 1982, p. 39). However, although they can act as language brokers or ad hoc non-professional translators, who are indispensable in their communities, they cannot be expected to translate in formal settings to a professional level and meet high quality standards without specific training. In this chapter, we review the continuum of translation as a human skill encompassing natural translation at one end of the spectrum and professional translation at the other end. We discuss what skills and competences need to be added to bilingualism and how bilingualism becomes enriched and transformed by translation training and translation practice. We start with the concept of natural translation and the translation performed by numerous non- professional translators. Then we elucidate the current understanding of translation competence and how it relates to the concept of expertise, and finally we discuss formal translator training programs and translation pedagogy with many current challenges.
