Sažetak
Recreational SCUBA diving represents a special form of physical activity, due to the body exposure to low temperature, hyperoxia and elevated pressure, which trigger numerous adaptation mechanisms in cardiovascular system (CVS). In order to contribute to the understanding of these molecular processes, specific heart, skeletal muscle and vascular biomarkers have been measured. To assess the effects of acute and cumulative diving on the CVS two studies were conducted ; “acute” study included 16, and “chronic” study 14 male divers who performed 1 independent and 5 consecutive dives, every 7 days (30 min ; 25−30 m depth), respectively. In “acute” study, blood samples were taken immediately before and after the dive, and during the recovery period (3 and 6 h later), while in “chronic” study, before and after the 1st, 3rd and 5th dive. Plasma levels of Galectin−3 (Gal−3), Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF) and Endothelin−1 (ET−1) were determined by commercial ELISA kits, high−sensitivity Troponin−I (hs−TnI) and N− terminal prohormone of Brain Natriuretic Peptide (NT−proBNP) by chemiluminescence assays, while hs−CRP and myoglobin by immunoturbidimetry assays. In acute study, Gal−3, hs−TnI, NT−proBNP, and VEGF significantly increased immediately after diving as compared to the controls. In parallel, ET−1 significantly decreased but it returned to the initial levels 6 h after diving. hs−TnI and NT−proBNP remained elevated during the recovery period. Both, myoglobin and VEGF as well as Gal−3 dropped to the initial values 6 h after diving, whereas the peak values were noticed immediately after and 3 h after diving, respectively. hs−CRP remained unchanged. In “chronic” study, the same pattern of changes for all markers was observed, except for hs−CRP, which significantly increased after the 3rd and 5th dive. hs−CRP, NT−proBNP and ET−1 concentrations increased significantly by each performed dive, while myoglobin, hs−TnI, VEGF, and Gal−3 values decreased. ET−1 did not changed significantly if comparing all post−dive values. These studies showed that SCUBA diving causes changes in specific biomarkers that reflect (patho)physiological changes in CVS after the dive. Furthermore, it was shown for the first time that continuously performed SCUBA diving caused decrease of specific biomarkers highlighting possibly positive effect of diving on CVS.
