Sažetak
In the introduction, the terminological and methodological specifics of the professional conservation approach to the protection of cultural heritage are presented, with a special emphasis on the procedures applied to war-damaged heritage. The next chapter briefly presents the directions of the Hague Convention as the international legal basis for the protection of cultural heritage in armed conflicts. Then, the war damages of cultural heritage from the 20th century are discussed from the perspective of art history and the conservation profession, as well as the progress of protective measures in attempts to protect it and the restoration and reconstruction of cultural heritage carried out after war destructions, which is an integral part of the topic from the point of view of conservation. In the treatment of examples from the First and Second World Wars, an overview of typical European cases is presented, with an emphasis on the interpretation of the situation in Croatian regions. Attention is also paid to movable cultural heritage and related conservation works of war protection, documentation and evacuation. The circumstances of the activities of the conservation service during the Homeland war in Croatia 1991-1995 are described briefly and in general, from the perspective of the witnesses of those events. The importance of the extensive internal conservation documentation created during the Homeland war (largely unexplored and mostly unpublished) is emphasized. Bearing this in mind, we are still waiting for doctoral dissertations and other more comprehensive research studies on the war destruction and protection of cultural heritage, as well as the postwar reconstruction. In conclusion, the experience that the Croatian conservation service gained during the Homeland War is pointed out. Models and protocols based on it could emerge for actions in crisis situations of threats to cultural heritage in the present and future.
