Sažetak
The discovery of the shipwreck Diano Marina, and other shipwrecks with a significant number of dolia, dating mainly from the end of the 1st century BC to the middle of the 1st century AD, led to the presumption of the existence of tanker- like vessels, utilized to ship large quantities of wine. These shipwrecks are mainly found in the western Mediterranean. This paper briefly presents what is known about the only existing evidence of a dolia shipwreck in the Adriatic Sea. It lies near Supetar Islet in front of Cavtat (ancient Epidaurum) on the southern Dalmatian coast, and holds the evidence of eight entirely preserved, and at least four more fragmented dolia. Remains of two other shipwrecks from the 1st/2nd century AD contain a substantial quantity of dolia fragments, but the poor preservation of the sites does not allow any further conclusion on the reason for their presence on board. A number of isolated dolia finds are also attested in Croatian waters, as well as a group of intentionally perforated dolia used for some economic purpose in the coastal zone.
