Sažetak
Looking at the problem of the social purpose and mediating function of monuments, Sanja Horvatinčić, in the chapter “From Storytelling to Re-enactment: Strategies of Monument-Making in Socialist Yugoslavia”, discusses the very notion of the monument in socialist Yugoslavia and examines commonly employed strategies in monument- making. By basing her analysis on strategy rather than form, she approaches monument-making as a process motivated by specific social needs and requirements with various and sometimes multiple agencies. Horvatinčić points to the wide variety of forms and concepts that were understood and accepted as monuments to the revolution – from authentic sites and objects to urban infrastructure and outdoor contemporary sculpture – and notes that their differentia specifica was sought not only in their intended visual appearance but also in what they could “do” or “achieve” in the highly politicized public space of the Yugoslav socialist system. Citing examples from different periods and regions of Yugoslavia, Horvatinčić goes on to elaborate certain key strategies of monument-making – from the use of traditional and innovative methods of marking and storytelling, to a concern with authenticity as seen in the use of scenographic arrangements and re-enactments, to tendencies towards both rational utility and aesthetic monumentality.
