Sažetak
Fruit postharvest losses are huge problem in fruit production and postharvest manipulation. One of methods for reducing postharvest losses in recent years is postharvest application of edible coatings. Use of single layered coatings ; hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC ; 0.5% and 1%), gum arabica (1% and 2%), sodium alginate (Na- Al ; 1.5%) and bilayered coating sodium alginate in combination with calcium chloride (2% CaCl2 and Na-Al 1.5%) were investigated as single layer coating on mandarin fruits quality for 10 days of storage at room temperature, simulating shelf life. After 10 days at room temperature, higher weight loss than control (12.64%) was noticed in fruits coated with 2% CaCl2+Na-Al 1.5%, and 1% gum arabica (13.26%), while HPMC (0.5% and 1%) fruits had lower than control (10.68% and 11.44%, respectively). Slight increase during shelf life in soluble solid content (10.33% at harvest) was noted in control fruits (10.7%) and fruits coated with 1% gum arabica (10.8%) and 2% CaCl2 + Na-Al 1.5% (10.5%), while fruits coated with HPMC 0.5%, and 1%) had higher values (11.8% and 11.1%, respectively). Only fruits coated with Na-Al had lower soluble solid content (10%) than in harvest. Titratable acidity after 10 days of shelf life was the highest in control fruits, while all coated fruits had lower titratable acidity than control fruits. These preliminary results showed that use of investigated coatings may have potential, especially in reducing fruit weight loss, but needs to be further studied to find optimal coating for fruit quality preservation.
