Sažetak
Humans and animals have a long history of complex relationships often manifested through the use of animals in funerary rituals as part of the sacrifice or offering to accompany the dead. Food placed in graves can reflect an identity, social status, or religious belief in a symbolic way. This paper presents the results of the analysis of animal remains from six female burials from two early Iron Age sites located in eastern Croatia – Batina and Sotin. New archaeozoological analyses and results from comparative sites from the southern Carpathian Basin will provide new insight into the understanding of the symbolic use and role of animals in Iron Age funerary rituals in the southern Carpathian Basin.
