Sažetak
Listening is considered a very demanding language skill and many foreign language learners highlight the challenges of trying to understand a listening text (Goh 2000 ; Graham 2006). This paper investigates the ability to understand a listening text, as well as the problems encountered by beginner Polish learners of Croatian as a foreign language (CFL) while listening. Respondents were asked to listen to several texts and to choose the correct answer or provide short answers to questions about the texts. In addition to these tasks, the respondents were asked to describe the problems they encountered while listening to texts in CFL (according to Goh 2000). Considering the findings on understanding of the listening text in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) and the problems faced by EFL learners, it can be assumed that Polish CFL learners will encounter similar issues. Namely, it can be expected that Polish CFL learners will quickly forget what they have heard, think long about the meaning of a word, or understand the word, but not the message (Goh 2000). Although listening is a particularly important and complex language skill, no similar research has been conducted in CFL. Therefore, it is expected that the results of this study will at least partially provide an answer to the posed research questions.
