Sažetak
Throughout Europe winter carnival processions are encountered with many names ; in Macedonia there are at least eleven names with different specifications. Ritual and magical actions are performed through dance and music, with or without masks for the well-being of the community. The structure of the ritual is common for all, and in the contemporary context, the changed structure of these, mostly dance, rituals is perpetuated on the level of their function ; from ritual-prayer for fertility and ‘healing’, through initiation (rite de passage), to stage performance and entertainment. This research is focused on the sustainability of two dance processions, călușari (in the village of Grebenac in Banat, north Serbia), and the rusalii (in the village of Sekirnik, southern Macedonia). The common characteristic of these two groups is that they belong to a rare set of rituals in the Balkans, the so called “well-groomed masked processions” and that they exist in the ‘shadow’ of the winter groups with predominantly monster masks.
