Sažetak
In the context of growing uncertainties and global insecurities that threaten the smooth flow of gas and other energy products, multiple facets of energy independence have become a predominant narrative in political discourses and an economical goal to pursue, at all levels, from local to national. While current political and social events are, perhaps, reshaping global world order and opening new class divides between energy poor and energy rich countries, bottom-up movements are spreading and, while questioning the legitimacy of certain actors to take the floor around the decisions to be taken on the territory around energy, are advocating for energy sovereignty. The energy transition on Croatian islands is still emerging, with two exceptions. Thanks to activists’ movement who not only are questioning current definition of sustainability but also promoting community-ownership over resources and production, for the last two decades the islands of Krk and Cres are pioneers in promoting solar transition as well as self- sustainability that is not focused solely on energy. Based on our ethnographic research, the aim of this paper is to analyse the motivations and meanings of sustainability and sovereignty among actors who are promoting energy transitions and energy communities on Cres and Krk. We suggest that, in analysing the contention around the use of energy and in terms of sovereignty of the territory and the sustainability of the economic and ecological insular environment, the concepts of energo- power (Boyer 2014) and insurgent citizenship (Holsten 2013) are useful in understanding how sustainability becomes defined in terms of control and power over production process of solar energy.
