Sažetak
The research focuses on students’ attitudes toward presentations as a teaching and learning method aimed at developing their speaking skills within the context of English for Specific Purposes (ESP). Presentation skills are vastly regarded as an essential communication tool in academic and professional environments. In the framework of ESP, they are an effective instrument for the development of functioning knowledge of specialized vocabulary pertinent to the students’ respective professional areas. As such, presentation skills help both teachers and students establish a clear set of content material, speaking objectives and assessment criteria. Led by the idea that presentations facilitate the acquisition of subject-specific, professional vocabulary and provide students with more control over and awareness of the content and structure of their spoken discourse, the authors propose two research hypotheses: (H1) Preparing and delivering presentations in ESP courses develops students’ speaking skills in English to a greater extent than do other forms of speaking activities in class, including oral exams ; (H2) If students prepare well for their presentations, they will consider their speaking skills to have advanced. To test the hypotheses, a two-part questionnaire was devised. The first part focused on students’ preparation activities, while the second looked into their attitudes toward giving presentations in their respective English courses. The questionnaire used a multiple-choice format. The sample included 154 students of six undergraduate study programmes at Libertas International University. Data was collected through Google Forms and subsequently coded into the statistical data processing program IBM SPSS Statistics Version 22 (Statistical Package for Social Sciences), in which a comprehensive database was created. Data obtained from the questionnaire was analysed quantitatively (descriptive statistics, bivariate correlations - Pearson coefficient, histograms with two or more variables, etc.), the results of which corroborated both hypotheses. Consequently, this paper points to the conclusion that presentations ought to become an essential part of any ESP syllabus aimed at the development of students’ speaking skills. Finally, researchers are invited to engage in further study of the effects of presentations – comparably as teaching and learning methods – on the acquisition of professional vocabulary and the development of foreign language speaking accuracy.
