Sažetak
The sections of Evliya Çelebi’s the Seyahatname which refer to the area of the former Yugoslavia, and therefore, Croatia as well, were translated by Bosnian orientalist Hazim Šabanović. His translation was published in Sarajevo in 1954 (part one) and 1957 (part two) under the title: “Putopis. Odlomci o jugoslavenskim zemljama”. His translation was created based on the printed edition of the Seyahatname (İkdâm edition or Ahmet Cevdet edition), published in Istanbul in the period from 1896 to 1938. Following the publication of the autograph the Seyahatname at the beginning of 2000s, plans emerged in Croatia for translating the sections of the Seyahatname which refer to the area of contemporary Croatia, and the autograph would be taken as the original for the translation. Since Evliya’s text is highly demanding, many issues and dilemmas have arisen regarding the translation. The intention of this work is to consider the following issues from the translator’s perspective: 1) to analyse how, how much and in what way Šabanović’s translation can affect the new translation, and 2) to briefly describe Evliya’s language and style in order to illustrate basic translation issues, with a specifc emphasis on the translation of sections which are written as rhymed prose.
