Sažetak
While Luis’ task in reestablishing authority across the lands of “realm of Saint Stephen” was not as great as his father’s was, both rulers had to devise and practice a number of diverse strategies in breaking the centrifugal tendencies set in motion during the period of rule of the oligarchs. This paper will look at the way how they used the title and position of royal knight (miles regius) in order to attract and tie the provincial elites to their court. The focus will be on the royal knights from Slavonia, Croatia and Dalmatia. How did certain individuals obtained such a position, how they used it and the social capital attached to it in their local societies, and how did the court used those men to control these same local societies? Comparison between these three provinces can help us to understand the interaction between the local elites and the court. That is, it can help us understand how did a composite political entity such as the one two Angevin kings ruled over in the 14th century functioned, when viewed as a complex web of links whose main nodes where members of local elites with a court position.
