Sažetak
Patient safety in the healthcare system is a priority when providing healthcare. However, every year between 8 and 12% of people admitted to hospitals and around 2% of patients in primary care in the EU become victims of an unexpected adverse event related to healthcare. A healthcare workers involved in an adverse event, medical error or injury to a patient, often experiences increased stress, anxiety and guilt and becomes a second victim of the event, increasing the likelihood of further errors and suboptimal care in the hours and days following the event. European research shows that around 72% of healthcare workers in hospitals and 62% in primary care stated that they have suffered the experience of second victim in the last five years. It is a worrying fact that 86% of these experts stated that they did not receive any psychological help, and 56% did not receive any institutional support. The aim of the paper is to define the phenomenon of second victim and highlight the importance of recognizing them in the health care system and to emphasize the emotional skills that improve psychological resilience to stressful events. The COST project CA19113 (The ERNST Group) was launched in the EU with the aim of exchanging knowledge and experience for the purpose of developing multidisciplinary support programs for second victims in healthcare. In Croatia, several studies have been conducted on factors of stress at work in health care, psychological help to health care workers in the time of COVID-19 was also offered at the level of national institutions, but for now there is no specially elaborated protocol for helping health care workers after an adverse event. The education of healthcare professionals on the management of adverse events should also include the development of communication and emotional skills to build resilience to the stress events at work.
